Adventures in Music is a parent-run, non-profit organisation based in Galway, which was set up in 2004 in order to promote family-oriented musical events. The committee was formed by nine mothers who met while attending Galway's Parent and Toddler groups.
Dedicated primarily to the cultural enrichment of children through music, Adventures in Music is aimed at providing children – and their families – with the opportunity to enjoy and learn about music, in a fun environment for both adults and children alike.
Our Gigs for Families usually run from about October to April, and are held once a month on Sunday afternoons at Saint Patrick's Band Hall, centrally situated next to Ceannt train station. These sessions are informal and interactive; the children are provided with pictures (for colouring), word searches and crossword sheets based on the afternoon's theme, and this is followed by the performance, which generally lasts about an hour. Then there's an opportunity to meet the musicians, and have a closer look at the instruments. This series features a variety of musical styles, and is open to all ages from infants upwards.
Once a year, we present a concert at the Town Hall. Our first concert was performed by the internationally renowned pianist John O Connor, who was also kind enough to officially launch Adventures in Music. Since then, we have had Micheal O Suilleabhain, Professor of music at The University of Limerick, accompanied by Mel Mercier and Kenneth Edge; we have also been proud to present an afternoon of interactive, traditional, contemporary and world music with the very talented singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, Liam O Maonlai.
